De Woenselse Poort (‘the Woensel Gateway’) hospital treats people with psychiatric conditions who need forensic or intensive care.
Forensic psychiatry is concerned with people who have been sentenced by the courts to detainment in a psychiatric hospital for compulsory care and treatment. The detainment order is aimed at treating the individual concerned and protecting society.
After treatment the person should no longer be a danger to himself or others. It should then be possible to live on one’s own again. This step is often realized through the help of a mental health organization such as GGzE (Mental Health Organization Eindhoven) in the form of a shelter plus care placement.
Treatment offered by De Woenselse Poort is defined by steps in the level of security, ranging from high security to medium and low security level. Methods such as ‘what works’ and ‘schema focused therapy’ are used. In daily life the environment of the clients is shaped by sociotherapeutic strategies.
Forensic treatment focuses on risks factors and protective factors.
To assess the risk factors that got a person into trouble, De Woenselse Poort uses an instrument called the HKT-30. Risk factors are the events that preceded the offence.
The process of recovery is often more difficult for forensic psychiatric clients than for people who are treated within the ‘regular’ mental healthcare system. Within a secure facility such as De Woenselse Poort, other conditions and rules apply. The Client Service Centre was set up with a view to offering clients more support and opportunities. Very soon after admission, the Client Service Centre can be called upon to help clients to help themselves and develop their skills and acquire general knowledge, separate from their treatment program and hospital ward. In this way, the Client Service Centre tries to assist clients in their recovery process.
Client participation and involving clients is important to De Woenselse Poort clinic. From having a say and activeparticipation to improving treatments and therapies and helping the organisation and personnel develop. Clientsassist in the optimization of the HKT-R (risk assessment).
This visualizes all the possible risk factors and how individualclients score against these factors. The assessment forms an integral part of the treatment plan. In thisway, we can follow the client’s progress during treatment.
